MagicPak Replacement, Installation & Repair

If your Grand Rapids area condo has no basement furnace and no condenser out back, the heating and cooling probably comes from a MagicPak. This all-in-one, through-the-wall unit holds the furnace, air conditioner and blower in a single cabinet on an outside wall, drawing air through a metal louver. Most last 15 to 20 years. We replace and install new MagicPak units throughout Greater Grand Rapids and repair the ones that still have years left.

MagicPak Replacement in Grand Rapids and Kent County

Swapping a through-the-wall system is a tighter job than replacing a basement furnace. The building sets the rules: the new cabinet has to slide into the existing wall sleeve, line up with the exterior louver, tie into the ductwork already in place and run on the same gas or electric service. The MagicPak V-Series is made to the original cabinet dimensions, so it fits most openings as a direct replacement. The M-Series pairs with a smaller louver for associations that prefer a lower profile on the outside wall.

These signs tell you a replacement is worth planning:

  • Your unit has passed the 15-year mark and needs repairs more often each season.
  • The compressor has quit, or an older unit is leaking refrigerant on the cooling side.
  • A technician has found a cracked heat exchanger on a gas model, a carbon monoxide hazard that should never be patched.
  • The data plate on the cabinet shows R-22, a refrigerant no longer produced in the United States.
  • Your utility bills keep rising while some rooms stay too warm or too cold.

MagicPak Installation for Condos in Ada, Kentwood, Wyoming and Beyond

Good installation work happens before the old cabinet ever leaves the closet. Our technicians follow the same process on every MagicPak job:

  • Site check: We measure the closet, wall sleeve and louver so the new unit fits without any cutting into the building.
  • Configuration: We confirm which setup your building supports, whether gas heat with electric cooling, all-electric or a heat pump with electric backup.
  • Sizing: We match cooling capacity to your home, since MagicPak units come in sizes from three-quarters of a ton up to three tons.
  • Code and permit: We check venting, the gas connection and electrical capacity against current code and pull the mechanical permit Michigan requires for equipment replacement.
  • Startup: We set the new unit, connect the ducts and thermostat, and run the heating and cooling cycles before we pack up.

Floor savers and hall runners protect common hallways and finished floors on every visit. Our heating installation page explains how we approach new equipment, and the cooling side of the unit follows the same standards as our AC installation and replacement work.

Picking the Right Packaged Unit: Gas, Electric or Heat Pump

MagicPak makes three main configurations, and your building usually points to the right one.

  • Gas heat with electric cooling: This is the usual choice where the building has gas service, and current gas models reach up to 95% AFUE.
  • All-electric: Electric resistance heat pairs with air conditioning in buildings that have no gas lines.
  • Heat pump: One refrigerant system handles heating and cooling, with 3 to 10 kW of electric backup heat for January cold snaps. See our heat pump services for more.

Technically, a MagicPak counts as a single packaged vertical unit, so its parts and replacements are specific to this equipment style. Some buildings allow a switch from gas to heat pump, though it can take association approval and an electrical upgrade. All current MagicPak production uses R-454B refrigerant, so a new unit also moves you away from older refrigerants that cost more to service every year.

MagicPak Repair When Replacement Can Wait

A breakdown on a younger unit is often a single part. Common culprits include a blower motor or capacitor, an igniter or flame sensor on gas models, a heating element on electric models, a control board or a plugged condensate drain. Our technician tracks down the failed part using the model and serial number on the data plate, then quotes the repair before starting. Our heating repair and AC repair pages cover what a service call includes.

When a unit is near the end of its life, we show you the repair quote and the replacement quote together so you can choose. Under our No Surprises guarantee, the upfront quote is the price, and if extra work is needed to meet the agreed scope, that cost is on us.

Maintenance That Protects Your New Unit

One visit a year keeps a MagicPak healthy: a heat exchanger check on gas models, coil cleaning, a drain flush and a clear exterior louver. Our heating system check covers the heating side, and members of the Canfield Home Care Club get priority scheduling, free system inspections and repair discounts.

MagicPak FAQs

What exactly is a MagicPak?

MagicPak is a line of all-in-one, through-the-wall HVAC units built by Allied Air Enterprises, a Lennox International company. The heating section, cooling section and blower sit in one vertical cabinet that breathes through a louver in the exterior wall. Each condo or apartment gets its own system with no condenser on the ground or roof.

Is a MagicPak the same as a packaged HVAC unit?

It is a type of packaged unit with one big difference. Most packaged HVAC units sit outdoors on a concrete slab or a rooftop and send air into the building through ducts. A MagicPak installs indoors, in a closet on an exterior wall, and pulls outdoor air through a louver. That is why a replacement has to match the existing wall sleeve instead of a pad or roof curb.

How many years will a MagicPak last?

Expect 15 to 20 years from most units. Yearly maintenance, fresh filters and a louver kept free of debris help a unit reach the upper end of that range.

Will a replacement fit the opening I already have?

Usually, yes. The V-Series is built to the original MagicPak cabinet dimensions for this purpose. We measure the sleeve, louver and closet before we quote, so the fit is settled before installation day.

How do you size a new MagicPak?

Units range from three-quarters of a ton to three tons of cooling. We look at square footage, windows, sun exposure and the existing opening on site instead of copying the old label.

Does my condo board need to approve a MagicPak replacement?

In many buildings, yes. Michigan condominiums operate under a master deed and bylaws, and associations often set rules for exterior louvers, equipment changes and contractor access to shared spaces. Ask your board first, and we can provide equipment specs for its review.

Can a heat pump MagicPak replace my gas unit?

In some buildings. The answer depends on your electrical capacity and association rules. Heat pump models carry electric backup heat for Michigan winters, and a technician can check your setup on site. Read more about heat pumps.

Should I keep repairing an older R-22 MagicPak?

Small electrical or ignition fixes can make sense. A refrigerant leak or failed compressor on an R-22 unit usually does not, because R-22 is no longer produced and the remaining supply is costly.

What financing is available for a new MagicPak?

We work with Service Finance Company, which offers extended promotional plans on qualified purchases. We are also an authorized Michigan Saves contractor for energy-efficient upgrades. Visit our financing page for details.

Can I call you after hours if my unit stops working?

Yes. Our team is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so a dead MagicPak on a cold night does not have to wait until Monday. Call (616) 207-3790 any time.
